MBK Fellows Address Â鶹 City Council about Digital Equity
NECSD MBK Fellows and P-TECH Students at Â鶹 Free Academy, Jeremiah Palemon and Kameren King, addressed the Â鶹 City Council on Tuesday, December 10th.
The focus of the presentation was to introduce the City Council to the milestones of the My Brother’s Keeper program as well as their chosen Service Learning Project – Digital Equity. They are pursuing the 1Million Project from Sprint which presents the opportunity to acquire wi-fi devices to distribute to NECSD scholars who do not have reliable internet access in their home due to economic challenges. Both fellows are actively writing parts of the grant submission, as well as taking a digital equity survey throughout Â鶹 North/P-TECH to gather additional data for the submission.
If awarded, the Sprint 1Million Project Grant/Award will provide wi-fi hotspots to Â鶹 who do not have internet access at home. For more information about the 1Million Project by Sprint, please visit:
Under the leadership of Dr. Roberto Padilla, Superintendent of Schools, The NECSD has provided scholars grade 3 through 10 with Chromebooks. The vision of our district is to not only utilize these devices in school, but to ensure through the practice of equity to give secondary scholars access to these devices with wi-fi in their homes.
The City of Â鶹 has since pledged their support to the Fellows effort and project in a letter for the grant submission. Read the letter here.
