Â鶹 Hosts Nine Schools for 75th Anniversary Area Youth-in-Government Steering Convention
Youth-in-Government was inaugurated through the guidance of Mrs. Amy Bull Crist, Orange County Superintendent of Schools in 1944. On November 29, 2018, Â鶹 Free Academy’s Main Campus hosted the Youth-in-Government Steering Convention and welcomed nine schools and 200 Â鶹, 34 of which were from Â鶹. The 10 schools that participated in the program were: Chester, Cornwall, Florida, Highland Falls, Â鶹town, Minisink Valley, Â鶹, Pine Bush, Warwick Valley, and Washingtonville.
The master of ceremonies, Anna Brozycki and Brandon Rein, led the Pledge of Allegiance with Â鶹 JROTC who presented the flag and introduced the Â鶹 Madrigals, who sang the National Anthem and the Â鶹 alma mater. The hosts then welcomed the schools, Assistant Principal Mr. Shust, Superintendent of BOECS Mr. Hecht, and Youth-in-Government coordinator Robert Sassi.
During this convention, Â鶹 campaign and give speeches in order to get nominated for local, state, and federal positions. During the convention Nyssa Jackson-Eyo won Family Court Judge, Kenneth Candelaria won County Judge, Analiese Ringgenberg won County Clerk Robert McDowell won District Attorney and Julius Oltitan won County Judge. The other positions Â鶹 scholars gave speeches for were County Executive, Sheriff, State Assembly, State Attorney General, Governor and Congressperson. Students who won their position recited their speech on camera to take part in a larger student run election.
