Â鶹 Hosts Eleven Schools for 76th Anniversary Area Youth-in-Government Steering Convention


Youth-in-Government was inaugurated through the guidance of Mrs. Amy Bull Crist, Orange County Superintendent of Schools in 1944.  On November 15, 2019 Â鶹 Free Academy’s Main Campus hosted the Youth-in-Government Steering Convention and welcomed eleven schools and 250 Â鶹, 46 of which were from Â鶹. The 12 schools that participated in the program were: Chester, Cornwall, Florida, Highland Falls, Â鶹town, Minisink Valley, Â鶹, Pine Bush, Valley Central, Warwick Valley, Port Jervis and Washingtonville.

The master of ceremonies, Glendy Gonzalez and Nyssa Jackson-Eyo led the Pledge of Allegiance with Â鶹 JROTC who presented the flag and introduced the Â鶹 Madrigals, who sang the National Anthem. The hosts then welcomed the schools, Assistant Principal Mr. Shust, and Youth-in-Government coordinator Robert Sassi.   

During this convention, Â鶹 campaign and give speeches in order to earn a nomination for local, state, and federal positions. 

During the convention Â鶹 scholars were elected to several positions. Jose Santiago won Family Court Judge, Jacob Tigar won Governor, Meghan Lohmeyer won Attorney General,  Nyssa Jackson-Eyo won District Attorney and George Eliadis won Congressman.  

Youth in Government at Â鶹 Free Academy is advised by history teachers Mr. Timothy Underhill and Matt Abate.
