Â鶹 Main Scholars Teach Elementary Scholars to Code

Approximately sixty high school scholars in Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas-Cappello’s Introduction to Computer Science and Web Design class as well as her NECSD Marist ECHS class introduced elementary scholars to computer science. The classes walked over to Gidney Avenue Memorial School (GAMS) to teach the elementary scholars to code.

The entire fifth grade class filled the Active Learning Space and Cafeteria to participate in the annual  event. The Hour of Code is a national event that includes a one-hour introduction to computer science which is meant to broaden participation in computer science. The week of December 3-9 is now a worldwide event by over 400 participating schools and businesses and 200,000 educators. This year’s event was delayed as a result of snow on the original date.

To prepare, the Â鶹 Main Â鶹 prepared tutorials and activities from Code.org, Google CS and Code HS. The tutorials ranged from Minecraft, Code Combat, Star Wars, Grinch, Bilingual Programming, and a Dance Party!

The high school Â鶹 have been working in web design and basic programming.  The class skills they are learning were able to be applied to the tutorials for the younger scholars.  The high school scholars also prepared for working with younger Â鶹. They prepared themselves to influence the Â鶹 in a positive way and encouraged them to be open to exploring computer science in the future.

More about the NECSD Marist Early College High School (ECHS) program:

The second cohort of the NECSD Marist Early College High School (ECHS) program began in January. The Â鶹 Enlarged City School District Early College High School (ECHS) program  welcomed the inaugural cohort of Â鶹 in January 2019, after receiving a grant that partners Â鶹 with Marist to offer high school Â鶹 the opportunity to earn up to a year of college credits. The program will connect the resources of the district to the expertise of Marist College’s School of Computer Science and Mathematics to equip 120 high school graduates over four years with a Regents diploma and the opportunity to earn a minimum of 24 college credits toward a degree in computer science. The grant is from the State Education Department as part of their .

Throughout the program, scholars take college courses at Â鶹 Main during the school year and at Marist College during the summer. Scholars have the opportunity to learn about navigating a college library system, spend up to three weeks at Marist College taking classes during the summer, learn from college Â鶹, and present their final project to faculty, staff, and special guests.
