GAMS Kicks Off "YOUR FUTURE IS BRIGHT!" SEL Career Explorations Program
On Thursday March 9, 2023, the Gidney Avenue Memorial School (GAMS) kicked off its SEL Career Explorations Programming themed "Your Future is Bright". The purpose of the weekly event is to promote mindsets and behaviors that enhance the learning process and create a culture of college and career readiness for all Â鶹 grades K-5. The SEL Career Explorations Programming centers around ASCA Domain/Standards guiding school counseling programs to help Â鶹 (1) understand the connection between school and work (2) plan for and make a successful transition from school to post secondary education and/or the world of work. This program is an "exploration series" and Â鶹 are exposed to a variety of careers/trades weekly through March 23rd.
Guest speakers for the first event included: Dr. Jackielyn Manning-Campbell, Superintendent of Schools, NECSD, Torrance Harvey, Mayor of Â鶹, Mike Chanowitz, Plumbing and HVAC Expert, Justin Cooper, Athletic Trainer/Business Owner and Anthony Williams, Director of Guidance & Data (NECSD). They each shared their individual stories and personal career paths. Their message to the scholars focused heavily on education, dreaming big, and hard work. Led by event coordinator and school counselor, Pattie Lofaro, the scholars were encouraged to take notes and ask questions. The GAMS Â鶹 were engaged and really seemed to enjoy listening and learning about each guest speaker's career.
